- 1896 was bitterly cold in the USA, but in Florida the orange trees were in bloom
- Julia Tuttle picked some blossoms from her orange tree and sent them to Henri Flager (railroad businessman ). H. Flager wondered where flowers could grow in a winter
- Miss Tuttle convinced him to build a railroad
- This railroad helped with air-conditioning to turn Miami and the rest of southern Florida into popular resort area
- in 1920s place for rich
- the Depression came next, 1936 a hurricane washed away a section of the railroad
- World War II brought a new life to southern Florida (military basement )
- After war lots of soldiers decides to stay here an make Florida their home
- Servicemen from all over the country were based here
