In the shops there are shop assistants who should be kind and helpful. They show us several things and we can choose one or more of them. When we buy some machine and the following day it doesn't work, we may exchange it or get the money back, but we should have the receipt. There is a guarantee for each thing. In the shop, there are trolleys or baskets, we can ask the shop assistant “How much does it cost?” or “What's the price?” and we pay at the cash-desk. Sometimes we can get a price reduction when there is a sale.
It is common in our shops or at the street market to pay in cash and get your change back. But in supermarkets it is possible to pay by credit card or by cheque. It is better than paying in cash because you don't have to take a lot of money with you and you don't have to be afraid of pickpockets. Shop-lifting is a big problem too, so there are guards and videocameras in most of the shops.
There are many types of shops, from the big departement stores, supermarkets and self-service shops to specialized shops and small flower stands or news-stands. In the supermarket you can buy all goods under one roof and this way of shopping is quite comfortable. But when we need some special thing, it's better to go to some specialized shop.
At the grocer's we can buy food such as bread, milk, butter, flour, eggs, cheese, sugar, salt, candies, mineral water, rice, pasta and so on. At the greengrocer's there are fruits and vegetables for example apples, bananas, oranges, lemons, potatoes, onion, garlic, tomatoes, carrot, cucumbers and things like these. At the butcher's we can buy various sorts of meat: beef, pork, mutton, chicken, turkey, fish and some meat products such as ham or sausages. At the baker's we can get some bread, roll or another pastry and at a confectioner's there is a wide choice of sweets.
In the shop with ready-made clothes there are many items - coats, trousers, jackets, shirts, skirts or dresses. China and glass shop offers plates, china, cups, vases and ceramics. Flowers can be bought at the florist's and rings, ear-rings and so on at the jeweller's. Sometimes we need to go to the chemist's to buy some soap, toothpaste, washing powder and cosmetics or to the pharmacy for some medicine or vitamins. We also buy shoes at the shoeshop, books at the bookshop, CDs and casettes at the musicshop. Nails and screws can be bought at the ironmonger's, a food mixer or a hair dryer at the electrical appliances.
