The President is the effective head of the executive as well as head of the State. His official residence is the White House in Washington. He is elected every 4 years and can serve only two four-years terms (since 1951). The candidates must be over 35 years of age, born in the US, and they must have lived in the US for at least 14 years. In case of the President’s death, resignation, or sickness, the Vice President assumes[1] presidency.
The President is the head of the state and government. He is the Commander in chief and therefore has the ultimate defense control over the Armed Forces. He appoints ambassadors, ministers, and consuls. In the case of a vacancy in a court of law, he appoints judges. His Executive staff is called the Executive office. It has 14 cabinet departments (state, treasury, defense, justice, etc.). It includes a number of independent agencies and Federal regulatory agencies. The head of the Cabinet advises the President on different policies.
The Judicial branch is the smallest and the most independent of the three. It interprets the law of the land. There are three levels of hierarchy, the Federal District Courts (94), the US Courts of Appeal (13), and the US Supreme Court. The judges are appointed by the President and must be confirmed by the Senate. In the US Supreme Court there are 8 associate judges and 1 Chief judge. In the US there are, the federal and the state.
Elections
The President and the Vice President are and they are chosen from the respective party. The Representatives are elected every 2 years. The candidates are chosen from the parties or by voters in the direct primary elections. The Senators are elected every 6 years. Each state has its own electoral laws. The right to vote can’t be denied on the basis of race, color, or sex if you are more than 18 years old.
Political parties
The two major parties are the Democrats and the Republicans. The parties usually alter their platform to obtain more voters. Both these parties have the free-enterprise capitalism system in their program. They both have two wings, liberal and conservative. The wings are usually connected with the other party and in Congress they sit together and they are against the other wing.
The Democratic Party was established in the 1880s. Their voters are mainly poor people. The Republicans have operated since. They were established as an anti-slavery party. Their voters are mainly wealthy people.
