- consist of 132 islands in the Pacific ocean
- became a state in 1959
- 8 main islands : Hawai ( largest), Oahu (largest population), Kauai, Maui, Malokai, Niihau, Kahoolawe, Linai
- the capital Honolulu is on Oahu
- Mauna Loa = the long mountain – the largest single mountain in the world
- Kilauea – a live volcano
- Hawaian – first were Polynesians
- bronze-colored skin, large dark eyes, dark hairs
- discovered by James Cook
- the largest ethnic: Americans , Japanese ( immigrated between the Two World Wars, work on the pineapple plantation, sugars fields)
- Hula – dancers sway ( kroutí ) their hips and move their arms gracefully to the rhytm of the ukelele and guitar
- Many tropical trees and fruits
- The state flower is the hibiscus
- Lei – wreath (věnec) of flovers
- Waikiki Bay – after 1929 surfing became a fashionable sport
- Mahaka Beaches – the higgest waves, in December ( International Surfing Championship) can be as high as 30 - 35ft., the higgest wave was 50 ft. In April 1868
- Hawaiian language – 12 letters in their alphabet, each word and syllable ends with a vowel
- Aloha state = love (welcome) state
