London is the capital both England and the United Kingdom.It lies on the river Thames.Almost 7 million people live there and about 12 milion in its conurbation.It includes the City of London and 32 boroughs.London is the seat of the Monarch, the Parliament, the Government and the Supreme Court.The prime meridian fo 0° passes through the old observatory at Greenwich.
The river Thames has been used as a highway since prehistoric times.The Port of London is one of the best in the world, but its importance has been falling.Dock areas are changed into "The Metropolitan Water City" -offices, shopping and sport facilities, homes, factories and even an airport(London City Airport).The latest transport are riverbuses which run on the Thames between Chelsea and Docklands and City Airport.London is also highway and railway junction.There are 15 railway stations, for example Victoria station and Liverpool Street station.The quickest and cheapest is underground the oldest over the world, often called tube.There are three types of buses in London: red double deckers, quick single deck Red Arrow buses and Green line buses which conect the City with many places in London.In addition, there are black taxis and long-distance buses called coach which depart from Victoria Coach Station.
The oldest park in London is St. James Park, but the most popular is Hyde Park with trees and grass intersected by paths with boating, swimming and horse riding.The main entrance is at Hyde Park Corner.There is Marble Arch former execution place.Speaker´s Corner is the place where everbody can speak without fear of being arrested for their opinions.Hyde Park continues with Kensington Gardens where stands Albert memorial and Kensington Palace with collection of uniforms including Princess Diana wedding dress.
The most busiest streets and shopping centres are in The West End(Oxford Street, Regent Street, Bond Street, Covent Garden, Soho).
