Traveling in America

Americans are a mobile nation. To have wheels=to be free. That’s why every American at the age of 16 (the latest time) has drivers license, almost every American has a car-the most common means of transport.
Automobiles were introduced in America in 20’s. In 1929-there were 26 million cars in America, car has changed the picture of America totally. Many Americans found jobs in car manufacturing industry, in highway and freeway construction (+ it helped many people during the Depression) + jobs in cafés motels … along the freeway.

Car transport has disadvantages:
In America-it extremely pollutes environment-especially in the big cities (there’s no public transportation). The government should support carpool. People should carpool and then have advantages from their employers (don’t pay the toll, have discounts in supermarkets)
Some cities support public transportation- San Francisco introduced BART= Bay Area Rapid Transport - a combination of underground system and busses
On the eastern coast, public transport is quite good, esp. in NY, Boston, Chicago

General word for underground is subway, in Chicago it's called the L, in NY-metro

Busses
• short distances
• long distances -the organization or company is called Greyhound
350 000 000 people per year travel on -II-
Cities + NP areas. They are quite cheap. Transport by bus has disadvantages -quite dirty, don’t provide good service, drivers are unpleasant + do not help. You have to reserve your ticket, they don’t take more passengers than there’re seats in the bus.

City
• you may pay cash
• buy tokans-small coins, the cost of it is-25cents of cash
• bus pass-card you buy for 80 dollars per month, valid in underground system
