The system
Between 2 – 4 years of his age he goes into a pre-school / play group and nursery school ( both subject are state and private ).
In England and Wales each child begins his compulsory school at 5 years ( in Scotland and NI at 4 years ). He can choose a type of school ( between state and private school ).
Primary school
Children learn to read, write a little, do simple counting. At 7 many children move to Junior school. There is a work more systematic there.
Secondary school
At age of 11 transfer about 90 % of pupils to Comprehensive school ( a state school ). This school takes children of all abilities. Parents don’t pay for books and equipment. About 6 % of children attend Grammar school. They are also state schools They only take students who pass a competitive examination. Parents don’t pay fees
Independent schools are private schools The students take exams. But parents must pay fees. In boarding schools the students live during tem time. The public schools are usually for boys but not only.
At the age of 16 years ends a compulsory school. Students make GCSE ( = general certificate of secondary education ). It’s a public examination, the minimum qualification for most skilled jobs. They can go in Sixth form college / College of further education ( state school, it’s begins by 6th grade ) or they can go in public school ( private school) At the age of 18 years they finish a secondary education
Tertiary school
If they get A in GCSE they will be able to begin of tertiary education. They can choose university, polytechnic or college of higher education. After 3 – 4 years they receive some titles as Bachelor of arts, science… They can study further 2 – 5 years.
